Why You Don’t Want Winter Pests In Colorado To Move In

Previous Post | Next Post

It’s winter time again, and you should be aware that a few miniature reindeer and a magic elf in a red suit aren’t the only visitors you can expect this time of year.

While you and your family are sitting around that warm, glowing fireplace you may be under assault by varmints and pests. Your home provides exactly what those unwanted guests are looking for…shelter, food and water. Some of the common pests in Colorado that may be looking for a new place to live are spiders, cockroaches, rats, mice, raccoons, and squirrels. These pests are not only a nuisance, their arrival can also lead to serious health issues, property damage, and unexpected expenses.

Spiders are most active at night. If the thought of a spider crawling on your face as you sleep isn’t enough to give you nightmares, then consider that fact that the bite of the black widow or brown recluse spider may cause muscle cramps, abdominal pain, and tremors. Ok, this is very rare but it is good to be aware of the more dangerous spiders in Colorado, just in case they decide to crawl inside your home.

Cockroaches carry allergens that can lead to cold-like symptoms, rashes, and even asthma attacks in young children.

Rodent infestations bring several problems: food spoilage due to feces and urine, damage to property such as gnawing of electrical cables, and transmission of diseases including Hantavirus and Hemorrhagic fever.

Raccoons and squirrels will tear apart ducts, shred wires, and put your attic insulation in places it was never meant to be.

So here’s the good news. There are many things you can do to protect your home.

  • Check doors, windows, and pipe/conduit access points for gaps that may allow pests in. Here’s a tip… when it is dark have someone stand outside a door or window and shine a flashlight along the edges of the door or window. If you can see the light inside then it’s time to close that gap!

  • Do not leave food out. Keep fruit, bread, etc. in sealed containers or the refrigerator.

  • Maintain a clean, neat living space. Pests love stacks of paper, piles of clothes, and unsealed cardboard boxes.

When it comes to the things you shouldn’t tackle yourself, a pest management professional can provide you with effective, environmentally friendly pest solutions. It usually starts with a thorough inspection to determine what your needs are. Exterior treatments to keep invading pests at bay; trapping and exclusion so you don’t wake up with a new, furry family living in the attic; and interior treatments to target specific pests when needed are just a few of the things a professional pest expert can do to keep your home safe from invading pests.
