Commercial Facility Pest Proofing Tips: Part 2

Previous Post | Next Post

As previously discussed in the article, Commercial Facility Pest Proofing Tips: Part 1, using an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program is a highly effective way to eradicate and control pests within your commercial facility. IPM uses environmentally friendly techniques to eliminate your current troubles with pests and puts into place an exclusion plan that will make your facility the last place that any pest would want to live in. Preventing pest infestations is key to preventing the many different threats that come with an infestation in your commercial facility.

More tips for pest proofing your commercial facility to exclude pests include:

  1. Insects and other pests are attracted to bright, white lighting. So instead, install lighting that emits a yellow tone, like sodium vapor lighting. Also, if possible do not attach outdoor lighting directly onto your building especially near entrance areas.

  2. Lighting inside of your facility should be clean and covered in order to prevent pests from being attracted to it.

  3. One of the best methods to keep pests out is to make sure that all doors and windows are tightly sealed and closed. Gaps found around doors should either be caulked or have rubber sealing placed around the exterior edge of them. Door sweeps should be installed on all doors. Also, nylon screens should be placed in doors and windows; they should be routinely checked for small holes or tears.

  4. Never store products or inventory near windows or exterior doors, this allows for pests to have easy access to them.

  5. Trash should be removed from your property 1-2 times per week at a minimum. Your trash containers should be regularly cleaned and have tight fitting lids on them as to keep invading pests away.

Remember, traditional pest control treatments do not have to be your first choice for pest control; prevention is often considered the most effective form of pest control as it eliminates the need to close the doors for an extermination in the event that an infestation has taken hold.
