Now that summer is upon us it’s time to consider mosquitoes. Although often dismissed as a nuisance pest, mosquitoes pose a serious threat to the health and welfare of people and pets across the country.
Mosquito bites are a common summertime occurrence and generally produce minor redness or swelling accompanied with itching. What is often unknown or overlooked is that a mosquito bite can also lead to the onset of serious and life threatening viruses such as the mosquito-borne West Nile virus whose symptoms include high fevers, headaches, muscle weakness, disorientation and even paralysis. Encephalitis, or swelling of the brain, can also be transmitted through a mosquito bite as can infectious agents that cause malaria and other dangerous illnesses. They may also cause heartworm in pets.
While mosquitoes are an especially active pest during the summer season they can be active all year long in warmer regions of the country. If your property seems to be inundated with these biting pests it may be that the conditions that promote mosquito activity are present. Standing water is a major draw for mosquitoes as they must have standing water in order to breed. You can reduce or eliminate mosquito breeding by emptying objects around your home or building that collect rainwater. Also replacing water in children’s wading pools and bird baths frequently can help deter mosquitoes as can clearing clogged gutters or installing gutter protection systems. A minimal amount of water is all a female mosquito needs in order to breed so make sure you inspect your property carefully.
To prevent mosquitoes from carrying you or a family member away keep doors and windows shut and for those that are open make sure that they are covered by screens that fit properly and that do not have holes. For those who enjoy being outdoors dress in light-colored clothing and wear items that have long sleeves and legs whenever possible. Also consider using an EPA approved insect repellant that can be applied to both clothing and skin.
Mosquitoes are a serious concern in all states especially during the summer season. Implementing preventative measures is helpful but may not be enough. If your property is experiencing a mosquito problem that just won’t quit, consider calling a local pest professional who offers mosquito control services in your area.
