Protect Your Landscape From Plant Pests

Previous Post | Next Post

Have you ever spent days or even weeks planting, grooming, and cultivating your lawn only to have plants ruined by troublesome insects? There are bugs in Hawaii that can cause irreversible damage to your landscape within just hours, making all your hard work on creating a perfect lawn destroyed. There are five species of insects that cause plant destruction:

  • Thrips – While the damage they can cause to plants is not seen by holes in leaves their hunger for pollen and buds of new growth can cause discoloration and deformation in plants and are known to spread plant diseases.

  • Aphids – These insects feed on plant tissues by injecting their toxic saliva into plants to break down plant material for them to digest. Destruction by aphids is noted by molted, wilted, or curled leaves with discoloration such as yellowing or browning of the plant leaves and stalks. Aphids are one of the most destructive pests not only due to their damage by feeding, but they also spread plant diseases that can kill off entire crops.

  • Mealybugs – Mealybugs are very much like aphids, whiteflies and other insects that pierce the plant tissues to drain fluids and nutrients from plants, but often accidently spread diseases to plants in the process.

  • Whiteflies – Similar to aphids, whiteflies use their toxic saliva to break down plant material to feed upon fluids and nutrients, often feeding in large numbers, spreading diseases and cause plants to mold.

  • Scale Insects – In the same family as aphids and whiteflies, scale insects feed upon plants with draining fluids and nutrients, but remain suctioned to plants while they feed. Scale insects vary in size and have of 8,000 different species around the world.
