There are many pests that can find their way into your home, but most insects and rodents make their presence known early on in their invasion into your home. Recently however, there is a new pest that has homeowners unaware of their growing infestation until the problem is out of control, carpet beetles.
Carpet beetles are often confused as bed bugs, they are similar in size, shape, and color and like bed bugs they tend to only venture out to feed at night. But that is where their similarities stop. Carpet beetles do not bite, but carpet beetle larvae have hair-like bristles on their body can scratch your skin and cause an allergic reaction on your skin that looks like bed bug bites. Carpet beetle larvae tend to avoid light and live in closets, inside furniture, and drawers, allowing them to feed on wool, silk, feathers, and other synthetic fabrics in their nesting site. There are a variety of carpet beetle species that can be found in your home, including general carpet beetle, black carpet beetle, and the furniture carpet beetle. Each species has a specific diet, with some feeding on fabric fibers, while others feed on seeds, grains, cereals, flour, cake mixes, dog and cat food and other items that other pantry pests tend to feed upon.
